HISTORY

Sopelana has expanded constantly over recent decades thanks to its appeal as a residential and tourist centre. A feature of the coastline in Sopelana is its spectacular rocky cliffs, interspersed with three magnificent beaches, a splendid landscape that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Communications with the outside world are also very good and the town offers an extensive range of cultural activities with numerous open areas for open-air leisure and sports activities such as the Arboleda de Urko recreational centre and Fernando Ansoleaga Park.

Sopelana also boasts a wealth of historical and artistic monuments dating from different epochs, such as the archaeological remains of Munarrikolanda and Kurtzio, the Renaissance church of San Pedro, the chapel of San Andrés and an array of open-air contemporary sculpture scattered around the town centre.
