Maruri-Jatabe is a small, traditional agricultural and livestock breeding town, located on the side of Mount Jata. Over recent years, due to its attractive, green landscape, scattered with meadows and farmhouses and the peace and tranquillity enjoyed here, compared to the hustle and bustle of the nearby urban centres, Maruri-Jatabe has become an important residential and tourist area.
The town has adapted gradually to the new requirements of its growing population and the increase in the number of summer visitors and has attempted to conserve its own identity and customs.
The first settlers in Maruri-Jatabe probably lived in the area around today´s Parish Church of San Lorenzo, on land halfway between the forests located on the sides of Mount Jata and the low-lying plain. Later, small rural hamlets of farmhouses, ironworks and watermills were formed in the river meadows, and their appearance today is much like it was centuries ago.
