Many years ago, the town of Loiu, situated in the extreme north of the Txorierri Valley, was an eminently rural area and today it represents a major area of industrial expansion and service industries due to the closeness of Bilbao, excellent communications and the presence of major infrastructures such as the Airport, which has been a key element in the development of this area.
The town is divided into two very different areas, separated by a central zone, occupied today by the airport.

• The hamlet of Zabaloetxe, to the north, is located on a gently sloping hillside. Here you will find the town centre with the typical layout of a rural community around the Gothic Church of San Pedro, next to a crossroads. Over the last 15 years, the town has undergone far-reaching changes as a consequence of residential developments. The main civic and administrative services are located here as well as a considerable number of teaching centres.
The primary sector continues to be important, as Loiu is a major livestock centre with fortnightly markets throughout the year (the second and third Sunday in each month) and is a meeting place for rural communities throughout the region.
• The town of Larrondo, to the south, is located next to the railway and the Asua-Erletxes highway, major communications routes that have led to the development of high levels of industrial activity. Here you will find the splendid Airport Control Tower. Its field of vision covers all incoming and outgoing aircraft and is oriented to prevent air traffic controllers from being dazzled by the sun.
