Laukiz square
Laukiz square
Laukiz enjoys a long tradition in farming and livestock breeding, favoured by the gentle landscape created by the river Butrón, which meanders between meadows and fields against a backdrop of low hills, the highest of which is Unbe (301 m). Until just a few decades ago, this represented the physical and population boundary of the municipality. Today, the Unbe-mendi housing estate covers part of its slopes.

The major industrialisation that took place in the region during the sixties did not affect the area surrounding the town, but due to its suitability as a place of residence, favoured by its closeness to large urban centres, it has seen a considerable increase in its population.
The pleasant town of Laukiz is located at the crossroads where you will find the Parish Church of San Martín, the town hall, the school houses, the “fronton” and “probadero” (where the Basque sport in which teams oxen compete against each other, pulling huge stones), as well as several restaurants where you can sample some of the local cuisine. One of the most illustrious figures in the culture of the Basque Country, the writer and poet Esteban Urkiaga, “Lauaxeta” was born in the building occupied today by the town hall, in 1905.
