| Butron castell |
Nearing its estuary, the river Butrón meanders slowly across the municipality of Gatika, creating as it goes an open landscape of broad meadows and fields. The river, navigable from Gatika to the sea, has had great importance in the history of this town, famous for its fertile lands and numerous watermills, some of which are still in operation, such as Lauxarra.
This fertile terrain has been cultivated for hundreds of years for grazing cattle and growing vegetables and legumes. The mild climate and the nearness of the sea also provide favourable conditions for growing vines and fruit trees. Old Virginia creepers can still be seen in a large number of farmhouses in this area and the fruit, cider and “txakoli” (young wine) of Gatika have earned themselves a well-deserved reputation at agricultural fairs in Bizkaia.

The beautiful landscapes of the Gatika area invite visitors to walk through its hamlets and see its well-kept farmhouses. Many of these date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and include a number of magnificent examples such as Arratza (Butroi), Santune (Gorordo), Lugarrieta (Sertutxa) and Urrustiñe (Garai) among others.
In Gatika, a visit to Butrón Castle is a must. This is one of the most emblematic monuments in Bizkaia, surrounded by a splendid garden of great botanical interest. Moreover, during your stay in Gatika, you will be able to do a number of different sports such as mountain-bike, canoeing or horseriding, in direct contact with nature. There are a large number of restaurants offering dishes based on local products.
