Erandio stands on the right bank of the river Nervión. Its strategic location, on the banks of the river estuary, near the main population centres of Metropolitan Bilbao, have led to the heavy industrial development of the area between La Campa and the Bilbao river estuary. However, the hamlets known as Goiherri and Erandio Goikoa, the original centre of the old town, still maintain their rural character.

The town centre is located on a narrow plain between low hills, with two small river-maritime areas (Asua and Udondo) and an area where substances carried by the water and deposited on the banks of the Bilbao river estuary (Altzaga or Desierto de Erandio) have raised the level of the terrain.

The town comprises seven historical hamlets. Altzaga Astrabudua, Erandio-Goikoa, Arriaga, Goiherri, Lutxana-Enekuri and Asua-Lauroeta.

Erandio is a lively town, full of activity and with a full range of services of all kinds, good communications and a variety of cultural, sports, economic, commercial and industrial activities. Erandio is also a town in which a large number of groups and associations take part in cultural initiatives and activities of all kinds throughout the year.

In the villages of Erandio Goikoa and Goiherri, you can find buildings of great interest, representative of an illustrious past, passed down by the major lineages that founded their ancestral homes in the hamlet from the Middle Ages onwards. Examples include the beautifully situated Tower of Martiartu, one of the finest towers of its kind in Bizkaia. This family also owns the Gothic tomb, which we can admire on the exterior of the historic Church of Santa María.
